On February 20th and 21st, 2016, Cyclone Winston (a Category 5 Severe Tropical Cyclone) with sustained winds of over 300kph rolled directly over Fiji. While this was the second worst storm on record world-wide, many resorts were spared serious damage and are fully operational. However, some resorts, local homes and villages in the direct path of the storm did not fare as well, and thousands of Fijians have lost everything.
The Fijian government has established several disaster relief funds to assist stricken families, and your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Donors will not be charged any fees, including overseas transactions. These funds will be used to directly benefit those Fijians who have been left homeless, without adequate food, water and essential services – especially those in rural and maritime communities. Please visit the Official Fiji Government site for information on how to contribute to these funds.
With regards to tourism, Fiji is open for business and the best assistance you can provide is to spend your holiday here as normal. Since different regions and specific resorts were impacted differently, please contact us for information on individual properties or general questions. Your tourism dollars can help to rebuild, and sustain jobs for resort and support staff during the lengthy recovery from this tragedy.
At Sea Fiji Travel we specialize exclusively in Fiji, providing a free service to our clients from making arrangements for accommodations, air transportation and ground transfers, to scuba diving, surfing, weddings, and more. Each itinerary is custom built for you, matching your needs and desires with one or more of the many resorts, liveaboards or dive operations in Fiji. Apart from recreational dive vacations for individuals and small groups, many travel agencies, dive and travel clubs, universities, and other larger groups have utilized us to organize a wide variety of scuba diving or other special interest travel in Fiji since 1990. As an example, we were the agent of choice for the Cousteau Society for four years running, sending over 90 scuba divers to Fiji each year to participate in their Project Ocean Search Expedition. We've also worked with the World Handicapped Divers Association, the Stanford Alumni Association, and other large organizations to assure them a wonderful Fijian stay. Because we know Fiji and Fiji diving, we can personally plan a vacation suited specifically for you or your group at a reasonable price!
There are many wonderful Fiji resorts and Fijian experiences to choose from, and whether you choose a unique adventure on the Tui Tai out of Savusavu, the incredible 'Shark Dive Experience' while staying at Beqa Lagoon Resort or Lalati on Beqa Island, the spectacular Manta Dive from Matava or Dive Kadavu resorts on Kadavu, or just lounging on one of the fabulous beaches in the Mamanuca or Yasawa Island Groups,we have personal knowledge that can really make a big difference to you. For example, the Tui Tai is a schooner that sails the Northern Group and incorporates scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, hiking and unique cultural experiences in areas no one else visits, creating an unforgettable vacation that you just can't get from either a land-based resort or a dive liveaboard. Namena Resort is surrounded by both land and marine preserves, and is an exceptional destination
for divers, snorkelers, bird and other outdoor enthusiasts. There is even an archaeological site on the island dating back over 3000 years! Ra Divers at Volivoli Resort or Wananavu Divers at Wananavu Beach Resort near Rakiraki can show you breathtaking dive sites in the Bligh Water (so named for Captain Bligh of the Bounty fame) and the Vatu-I-Ra Channel that the liveaboards visit, or you can really immerse yourself from Nai'a or the Fiji Siren, two of Fiji's premier liveaboards. Matava and Dive Kadavu offer a manta dive where sightings are over 80% reliable. Of course there are countless adventures like these throughout Fiji, and we can help you discover them and build a memorable holiday. Fiji's culture and diving have never been so accessible.
